Vata Season: Balance Within

Vata Season in this part of the country occurs from about Oct/Nov to February.  The qualities of this Fall/Winter season are cold, damp, dry, mobile, and dark.  Our bodies starts using its nutritional reserves from the summertime, and we go into a sort of hiberation, Bear Energy.  We need to sleep more, eat more grounding foods, reserve our energy, and use our stored nutrients to carry us through the Winter.

How do we do that?  We must do this in all aspects:  Diet and Nutrition, Spiritual Practice, Body Therapies, Daily Routine, and Yoga.  Here is a list of helpful hints to remind you to connect with your mind, your body, and your spirit and stay connected to it all.

  • Eat warm, moist and oily foods.  Our bodies are getting colder and drier and we need to combat this by eating nourishing foods.  Soups, Winter Squashes, Rich Broths, Dark Leafy Greens, and an herbalized jam known as Chavanprash is good to take throughout the Winter to promote good immunity and vigor.
  • Look inward for this season’s spiritual practice.  Keep a gratitude journal for 30 days, take comtemplative walks, use aromatherapy to enhance your meditation practice.
  • Give yourself a daily self-oil massage.  Warm the oil and massage in the morning.  This will improve circulation, blood flow, and lubricate dry tissues and organs.
  • Do Restorative Yoga:  find balance in the simpler practice, and work on subtle areas of the body:  the joints, hands, feet, spine.
